4 Common Drywall Issues You Might Not Know

Drywall, also known as sheetrock or wallboard, is a common building material used for walls and ceilings. Drywall typically consists of several layers of gypsum board (a paper-based product) mounted or adhered to both sides of a thick layer of fiberboard. Many homes have drywall installed throughout the entire house, including walls and ceilings.

Every now and then, people might come across drywall damage. The most common reason is moisture damage. Whether it be from a broken pipe or poor ventilation in the bathroom, water can cause serious structural problems with your wall and ceiling that you might overlook.

Here are some common problems you may encounter with your drywall:

#1 Cracks

Drywall can crack when exposed to too much water or moisture, causing walls to buckle and wrinkle over time. Drywall cracking may appear to be a minor issue at first, but it can soon escalate into a more serious one, so it requires immediate attention to prevent further damage.

Examine the ceiling for cracks. Excess moisture causes these cracks, which can be avoided with regular roof inspections. Cracks in drywall can also be caused by poor drywall installation or the natural house settling. A joint compound can be used by your house painter.

#2 Peeling Paint

Peeling paint can result from water damage or improper preparation before painting the surface. Paint can also start to chip away due to age and sunlight damage.

You should remove the paint, sand it,  prime the wall to seal it, and then repaint it to fix this problem.

#3 Tight Joints

If joints are too tight or not plastered properly, the drywall may rip away due to the natural expansion and contraction of the wood framing. If you think that the joints are too tight (and if they’re painted over), there’s a chance they might become damaged sooner than expected.

A 1/8″ spacing between drywall sheets is recommended to prevent tight drywall connections and subsequent cracking. Checking the health of your drywall is critical because broken drywall can compromise the essential integrity of your home.

#4 Termite Damage

Termites eat wooden support beams that work with drywalls and keep houses up, so when they attack your home, the integrity of it begins to deteriorate. If you see any drywall covered in mud tunnels, termites are likely the culprits.

Even if all of the damage seems to be above ground, there could still be colonies burrowing underneath your property. The best practice in these scenarios is to contact a professional for a sheetrock inspection and treatment plan.
